Judo: Heart and Soul by Hayward Nishioka
From the very first paragraph, you can tell Hayward Nishioka is a guy who's fallen head over heels in love with judo. As you might be able to guess from the title, Judo: Heart and Soul is not too concerned with technical instruction. In these five chapters, each with twenty to thirty short sections (some just one paragraph), Nishioka shares a lifetime of judo experience...

Check out the Budo Karate House. It's a live-in karate training program located in Washington D.C. You have to make a three year committment, work part-time and donate your earnings to the program, but otherwise there's no charge. Like a monastery or the army: shaved heads and everything.

Chinese Playground by Bill Lee
This is not your typical martial arts book. In fact, at the risk of venturing off-topic, it's not about martial arts at all. This is a harrowing tale of gang life in San Francisco's Chinatown--one man's personal journey from street thug to corporate thug, and his struggle to move beyond the violence that filled his life from early childhood.

JUDO RULES
Yoshida is a knockout in mixed martial arts
The Japan Times
Aug. 30, 2002
Former world and Olympic judo champion Hidehiko Yoshida made a successful debut in mixed martial arts fighting Wednesday, knocking out Brazil's Royce Gracie seven minutes into their bout at Tokyo's National Stadium.
Yoshida, the first Japanese Olympic gold medalist to step into the mixed martial arts ring, knocked Gracie out with a choke hold as the referee stopped the bout at 7:24 of the first round when the Brazilian jujitsu practitioner lost consciousness.
Yoshida, 32, who had retired from competitive judo in April, won the gold medal at 78 kg at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and was also a member of the Japanese teams at the Atlanta (1996) and Sydney Games (2000).
He also won the World Championship crown at 90 kg at the 1999 meet in Birmingham, England, and has served as head coach of the judo club at his alma mater Meiji University.
An estimated 91,000 people took in the mixed martial arts show, including a number of other bouts, held outdoors in a ring set up on the grass of National Stadium.

- Re-organized the school directory. I think it makes more sense now, take a look.
- Thanks to all the Sabaki mailing-list members who took a look and wrote in. Tell your friends!
- Found a well-written article on the Hawaiian art of lua (bone-breaking) and how it relates to Danzan-Ryu jujitsu. By Bob Reish. I had never heard of lua before.

Karate-do: My Way of Life by Gichin Funakoshi
Unlike other books by Gichin Funakoshi, such as Karate-Do Nyumon or Karate-Do Kyohan, Karate-do: My Way Of Life is not an instruction manual in Shotokan karate, but rather a personal memoir. This book is a blast to read, by turns inspirational, sad, hopeful, and hilarious.
Fist of Legend starring Jet Li
An All-Time Classic! If you haven't seen this movie, beat yourself with a rubber hose until you turn black and blue. Then go get it and watch it several times! This is Jet Li's remake of Bruce Lee's equally classic Fist of Fury, or The Chinese Connection as it was titled for U.S. release. The story is the same in either version: The star pupil of Jing Wu Men martial arts school returns to Shanghai after a long absence...
