"Thank you for getting back to me about the site updates. I appreciate your help. The site is great and sends folks to our school often. Thanks!" -Dara Masi, Head Instructor Suigetsu Dojo.
F.A.Q.
Martial Arts NY was started to be an information source for New York martial artists, and people who are looking for a martial arts school. To that end, our main functions are listings of schools for all five boroughs plus Long Island, an event calendar of tournaments and seminars in the area, and a directory of martial arts supply stores.
We also feature book reviews, video reviews, and soon, interviews with martial arts masters who live and work in New York.
I want to train in a specific style near my home in NYC. How would I go about finding the right school using your website?
Go to the Directory page and click on the applicable borough. Each borough page is organized by style. For instance, if you wanted to take kendo lessons in Manhattan, you would go to the Manhattan page and then click on the Kendo section.
I'm interested in learning martial arts, but I don't know which one is for me. How can I pick the right one? Can you recommend a school?
Start by asking yourself why you want to learn martial arts. Self-defense? Physical fitness? Spiritual benefits? Want to be like Bruce Lee? Jet Li? Once you have a goal more firmly in mind, you can focus on the specifics. Do you like lots of rough, sweaty, physical contact? Judo or Brazilian jujitsu may be for you. Would you prefer to learn something like boxing, only with kicks? Check out Thai boxing schools, or some of the many kung fu schools. Looking for internal development with less contact? Try tai ji quan or certain aikido schools. Perhaps you'd like to learn a weapon right away. Some Filipino martial arts (kali, escrima, arnis) teach knife and stick techniques before empty-hand techniques.
Only you can choose the right school for you. After doing some research on the internet, the best way to choose a school is to visit. Most schools will let you observe a class. While you watch, ask yourself some questions. Does the instructor seem to know what he or she is doing? Can you picture yourself participating in the class? What is the general atmosphere? Good luck!
How do I add my martial arts school to the directory?
Go to Directory, Schools, Add Your School. Or click here.
My school/store is in New Jersey or upstate. Can I add it to the directory?
Not at this time. If a lot of people ask, we'll expand to NJ.
My school teaches many different disciplines. Can I be listed under multiple style headings?
Sure. Just specify which headings you'd like to be listed under, keep it to two or three.
My school has many different branches. Can they be listed separately?
Sure, if they have different addresses, they should be listed separately.
I have a great idea on how to make the site more useful...
Great, let me know! If you have ideas drop me a line and let's discuss.
How can I advertise on MartialArtsNY.com?
We have a full range of sponsorship opportunities available. To find out more, please email .
Who put this website together?
I have put everything together so far, with help from some volunteers. Send me your school info, or become part of the team. Credit for the nifty Javascript menu, as well as date function, belong to Dynamic Drive and Javascript Source, which give out free DHTML code and Javascripts. I have no idea how javascript works, but it does.
