Don't Forget! U.S. Open San Da Championships Next Month!

Chinese-style kickboxing! This is a very popular kind of kickboxing the world over, which allows the use of knees and throws. However no groundwork, chokes or armbars are allowed, keeping the fighters on their feet... unless one of them gets slammed with a vicious shoulder throw. All the details can be found here: U.S. Open San Da Championships

Here is an update on weigh-in procedures from tournament director David Ross:

All San Da competitors must weigh in to compete. There will be two opportunities to weigh in but please note the following rules regarding weigh ins:

The first weigh in will be held Friday December 9, 2005 between 3 pm and 9 pm. They will be held at

Comfort Suites at Woodbridge
1275 Route 1 & 9 South
Avenel, New Jersey 07001
Phone: (732) 396-3000
Check with Front Desk upon arrival for location of weigh-ins

At this weigh in, if you do not make the weight class you registered for have three options;

1. Compete at another weight class.
2. Weigh in again before we close the session that night.
3. Come back in the morning during the same day weigh ins.

Day of tournament weigh ins
There will be a weigh in the morning of the event at the tournament location. However, in order to make the brackets, start on time and run smoothly the following rule will be enforced.

If you weigh in and are the weight you indicated on your pre-registration form, there is NO PROBLEM. Note, you will also have approximately 2 hours to weigh in and "make weight" that morning. In addition, we allow a half KG (1 pound) weight difference the day of the event. So if you registered for the 154 class and are 155 the day of the event, there is NO PROBLEM. However, if you elect to wait until the morning of the tournament to weigh in, do not make weight, and can not make weight within the two hours we are doing same day registration, you will not be allowed to compete.

If you have any questions about this matter, contact Sifu David A Ross at (212) 239-8619 or LKFMDC@att.net

MASTER LUGO IS A LICENSE MIYAMA RYU INSTRUCTOR

In 1960 the Tremont School of Judo and Ju-jutsu opened its doors to the public for the first time. The founder, a fierce man named Antonio Pereira, taught a fighting style which he called Combato, the way of Combat.

Combato was a crude form of Ju-jutsu. The founder had learned these fighting techniques from commandos during WWII in Australia. The founder traveled to Japan and studied martial arts for eight hours a day under such masters as Mifune of Judo, Ueshiba of Aikido and Professor Shimata of Ju-jutsu. His fierce resolve and
dedication won him many honors. Among them were a teaching certificate in Aikido signed by Kisshomura Ueshiba, a Nidan in Kodokan Judo and a San Mokuroku in Sosuishitsu Ryu Ju-jutsu.

The founder returned to the United States and began to teach Aikido at the Tremont School. But this wasn’t suitable for the residents of the Bronx, who needed more
aggressive self-defense techniques. He refined his original Combato, augmenting it with the classical techniques that he had learned. The founder called his method Miyama-Ryu, which means the School of the Three Mountains, and he assumed the title of Shinan (The Originator).

Miyama-Ryu fighting techniques have been taught to U.S. Army Special Forces teams, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation units, several Police Departments,
and thousands of civilians.

Hey all, I just received this email and thought I'd pass it along... Looks like a good time.

My kung fu master, Zhang Shengli is in New York visiting from Beijing for a short time, and I was able to arrange a workshop for him to teach this weekend. It presents an incredible opportunity to study under one of China's foremost martial artists, who understands both the martial and spiritual aspects of kung fu and is willing to openly teach them both. Please come if you can, and forward this to anyone you feel might be interested in attending. Call me with any questions at (718) 781-4360. I look forward to seeing you there.
